Many people use products to protect their facial skin. Here are a few that may benefit the skin on your Neck.
I've accepted that the horizontal lines encircling my Neck are here to stay. They were present since birth and will only become more pronounced as I grow older unless I opt for expensive treatments.
Fortunately, there is still hope for others.
My neck wrinkles are genetic. I cannot attribute them to constantly looking down at devices, neglecting to apply sunscreen below the chin or the natural thinning of the skin due to age and gravity.
If you believe one of those factors contributed to your necklines, experts have recommended some tips and products that may help.
Remember your Neck
"Tech neck" refers to increased neck pain or the sudden appearance of horizontal lines on the Neck due to constantly looking down at devices.
The Neck should be more frequently addressed in daily preventative skincare routines.
Dr. Morgan Rabach, a board-certified dermatologist at LM Medical in New York City, said, "The Neck is where people forget to put their cream. I believe everything that we're doing for our face, we actually should be doing for our Neck, too."
The founder of Future Bright Dermatology, Dr. Elaine Kung, added that individuals of all ages should consider skincare for all sun-exposed areas.
"UV exposure breaks down elastin collagen in the skin that helps it stay firm and tight. Once these fibers break down, the skin can wrinkle, loosen, and thin," Kung explained. She advises applying sunscreen with zinc and titanium oxide everywhere, including the Neck.
What to consider in a neck cream?
Rabach emphasized the importance of applying sunscreen to the Neck daily and ensuring it contains common facial skincare ingredients like antioxidants, vitamin C, and retinol. These ingredients not only help with long-term wrinkle prevention but also contribute to the skin's overall health.
Generally, the ingredients used to prevent wrinkles and maintain skin elasticity on the face also apply to the Neck. Kung agreed that vitamin C helps with collagen synthesis and protects against environmental damage, and retinol stimulates collagen and elastin production. She also recommended neck products containing vitamin E, peptides, and hyaluronic or polyglutamic acid for hydration and plumping.
"Anti-aging ingredients are useful throughout the skin of your entire body," Kung noted, adding that specialized products for the eyes and Neck may have different formulations or ingredient concentrations based on the skin's tolerance.
Although my Neck seems like a lost cause, Kung believes some neck wrinkles can be reversed using topical treatments. Prevention is the best defense, meaning it's better to start using neck creams in your 20s rather than in your 50s. However, it's not too late if "tech neck" has already caused premature lines.
"I think prevention is necessary because it could always get worse, but for people interfering early, they could help reverse some of the fine lines and stop further signs of aging on your neck.
Don't Forget the Neck!
In conclusion, caring for the skin on your Neck is just as crucial as taking care of your facial skin. By incorporating the right products and ingredients into your skincare routine, you can effectively combat neck wrinkles, sagging, and other signs of aging. Experts recommend using neck creams with vitamin C, antioxidants, retinol, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to maintain skin elasticity and health.
Prevention is key, and it's always early enough to care for your skin.
